Dear Students,
Since the 2016-2017 Academic Year under the roof of Osmangazi University, the Midwifery Department has been continuing its education and training services with more than 350 students in formal education within the Faculty of Health Sciences. There are six faculty members in our department, two Professors, three Associate Professors, one Assistant Professor, and three Research Assistants. There is also a postgraduate classroom for our master's and doctoral students in the Midwifery Department. In addition, there are multi-purpose meeting halls numbered 1 and 2 within the faculty where they can make seminar presentations, thesis proposals, proficiency exams and defenses.
Midwifery education program has been updated within the scope of EUÇEP (2016) and it is aimed to provide knowledge and skills by supporting the scientific and theoretical infrastructure with up-to-date information in theoretical courses and to train students as contemporary and qualified midwives with a broader perspective and ethical values with the increased number of elective courses. During the education period, our students who complete 130 hours of theory, 4 hours of laboratory, 98 hours of practice in total within the scope of compulsory and elective courses in our curriculum (2024 update) and 177 credits and 240 ECTS become graduates. In addition, the graduation criteria defined in accordance with the 5th article of the “Regulation on Determination of Minimum Education Conditions for Doctorate, Nursing, Midwifery, Dentistry, Veterinary, Pharmacy and Architecture Education Programs” dated 02.02.2008 and numbered 26775 by the Presidency of YÖK must also be completed. The opportunity to continue education abroad for 1 or 2 terms within the scope of ERASMUS and MEVLANA exchange programs or at another university that has an agreement with ESOGÜ within the scope of the FARABI exchange program is offered.
The International Confederation of Midwives defines a midwife as a person who is accepted to midwifery education in the relevant country, successfully completes this education and is legally allowed to practice the profession; the World Health Organization defines a midwife as a person who provides the necessary service during pregnancy, birth and after birth, who performs normal births under his/her own responsibility and is trained to care for the newborn; and the Ministry of Health defines a midwife as a health professional authorized to practice the midwifery profession according to Law No. 1219. Within the scope of duties, authorities and responsibilities, it is seen that with the Midwifery Regulation No. 32741 enacted on December 03, 2024, a wider area and independent roles in the duties, authorities and responsibilities of midwives have become clearer, and definitions such as responsible midwife, expert midwife and guide midwife have been made. The science and art of midwifery is a professional profession based on ethical values. Midwifery education in our country is currently provided at international standards, undergraduate and graduate levels, as a result of long-term, progress and regression periods. Strengthening the midwifery profession is very important in terms of protecting and developing maternal and child health in particular, and public health in general, and therefore increasing the quality of health services in our country. Our graduates who receive up-to-date academic and professional basic education in the field of midwifery have the opportunity to find employment in various health fields. After graduation, midwives can work in relevant departments of university hospitals, state hospitals and private hospitals.
